 Propionic and glucose requirements

To meet the energy needs of metabolism and production, cows need a high level of glucose. For example, a cow producing 35 liters of milk needs:

  • 700 g of glucose for maintenance.
  • 2,520 g of glucose for milk production (72 g * 35 L).
  • A total of 3,220 g of glucose per day in total.

More than 70% of blood glucose comes from propionic acid through neo-glucogenesis in the liver. (sourse)

The key to increasing performance and glucose level is to increase propionic levels, and for this purpose dietary carbohydrates are good tools.

Indeed, carbohydrates, and in particular starches, allow a good yield of propionic-type volatile fatty acids, but they have limits:

 High starch diets can cause changes in rumen conditions, such as acidifications of the rumen environment (pH drop due to lactic acid production), which disturb the cellulolytic flora, decrease digestibility and can result in ruminal acidosis. A high level of by-pass starch can ferment in the large intestine and cause inflammation.

Valkalor manages ruminal fermentations

VALKALOR is a complex of plant extracts, created by IDENA in 2002 to optimize the energy yield of diets.

The active ingredients of VALKALOR have been selected to regulate the ruminal microbial flora. On the one hand, Valkalor's active ingredients reduce the growth of lactic acid producing bacteria in the rumen. On the other hand, the active ingredients of Valkalor stimulate the development of beneficial bacteria that consume lactic acid. With the use of VALKALOR, energetic fermentations richer in lactic acid are achieved.
